A biosphere terrarium is a sealed or semi-sealed container mimicking a natural ecosystem, where aquatic plants and microorganisms cycle nutrients and oxygen to maintain life without external intervention. Creating a closed aquatic system is one of the most rewarding challenges for an experienced aquarist. It shifts your focus from high-tech equipment to the delicate balance…
To increase nitrates in a reef tank, you can safely implement strategies like increasing bioload, adjusting feeding frequency or quantity, reducing nutrient export (e.g., dialing back protein skimmer efficiency or GFO use), or carefully dosing liquid nitrate supplements such as potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate solutions. Welcome, fellow aquarists, to “Successful Aquarium”! If you’re reading…
Hydroponics in aquariums, often termed aquaponics or a refugium, offers significant benefits like natural nitrate sequestration, improved water quality, enhanced dissolved oxygen, and a healthier environment for fish, shrimp, and plants, reducing the need for frequent water changes. Introduction: A Natural Path to Aquarium Health As aquarium hobbyists, we all strive for that perfect balance:…
A biodome terrarium is a sealed, self-sustaining glass environment that mimics Earth’s natural cycles through moisture recycling and nutrient exchange, allowing plants and micro-fauna to thrive with minimal external maintenance. Building a miniature world inside a glass vessel is one of the most rewarding projects an aquarist can undertake. While we are often focused on…
To increase nitrates in a planted aquarium, you can either increase your fish stocking density, boost feeding habits, or supplement with potassium nitrate fertilizers to ensure your plants have adequate macro-nutrients. If you have ever stared at a struggling planted tank, wondering why your growth has stalled despite having lights and CO2, you are likely…
Axolotls are unique salamanders that stay in their larval form their whole lives, possess incredible healing abilities, and live exclusively in the cool, dark waters of Mexico. If you have ever visited a pet store or scrolled through aquatic social media, you have likely encountered the wide, smiling face of an axolotl. Scientifically known as…
The primary disadvantages of hydroponics include high initial setup costs, a total reliance on electricity, and the risk of rapid disease spread. Additionally, maintaining the complex balance of water chemistry and nutrient levels requires significant technical knowledge. Over the last decade, I have seen a massive surge in aquarium hobbyists trying to bridge the gap…
For most aquariums with a functioning filter, a 25% weekly or 50% bi-weekly water change is a solid starting point. However, factors like tank size, stocking density, filtration efficiency, and water test results are crucial in determining the ideal frequency and volume to ensure a thriving environment for your aquatic inhabitants. Welcome to “Successful Aquarium”!…
If your Russian tortoise is not eating, it is usually due to improper enclosure temperatures, lack of UVB lighting, or early signs of brumation. Adjusting your husbandry and checking for respiratory issues is the first step toward recovery. In my decade of keeping both aquatic and terrestrial species, I have learned that a sudden loss…
The best plants for terrariums closed are moisture-loving species like Fittonia albivenis, mosses, and ferns. These plants thrive in high relative humidity and consistent moisture, making them perfect for the self-sustaining cycle of a sealed glass environment. Creating a self-sustaining miniature world is one of the most rewarding aspects of the botanical hobby. After a…
