In 2003, I set up my first aquarium — a 10-gallon planted freshwater tank with three angelfish, a handful of tetras, and a cluster of java fern. I did everything the pet shop told me to do. Within six weeks, two of the angelfish were dead, the fern was rotting, and the water had turned the color of weak tea.
I went back and asked what went wrong. The answer I got was to "do more water changes and add some conditioner." I followed that advice. Things got slightly better, then worse again. I started reading every aquarium forum I could find. The information was contradictory, largely based on hearsay, and almost never explained the underlying reason behind any recommendation.
"I wasn't looking for someone to tell me what to do. I wanted to understand why — and no resource existed that gave me that."
So I started testing things systematically. I kept detailed notes on every parameter change, every fish behaviour shift, every plant growth cycle. I set up a second tank, then a third. I deliberately introduced imbalances — added too much fertiliser, ran lights for eighteen hours, pushed CO₂ levels — and documented what actually happened versus what I'd been told would happen. Most of what I'd read online was wrong, incomplete, or context-dependent in ways nobody acknowledged.
Over the next decade, I moved through freshwater planted systems, African cichlid biotopes, a brackish mangrove setup, and eventually marine reef tanks. Each system had its own biology and chemistry, but they all shared the same fundamental truth: stable aquariums are designed, not maintained. The work happens at setup. If the system is right, the day-to-day becomes almost passive. If the system is wrong, no amount of intervention fixes it for long.
Successful Aquarium exists because I couldn't find the resource I needed when I was starting out. Everything here is built on personal documentation, real testing, and an honest accounting of what works, what doesn't, and — critically — why.
