Identifying the sex of your Penguin Tetras is best achieved by observing body shape and fullness; females are typically rounder and more robust, especially when carrying eggs, while males remain slimmer and more streamlined. If you are a fan of South American characins, you have likely come across the charming Thayeria boehlkei. Known for their…
In a 10-gallon tank, you can safely keep a school of 5 to 6 lemon tetras. This specific number balances their social shoaling behavior with the biological capacity of a smaller aquarium environment. Lemon tetras, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon pulchripinnis, are among the most charming and resilient fish in the hobby. Their translucent yellow bodies…
Neon tetra disease is a fatal condition caused by the microsporidian parasite Pleistophora hyphessobryconis. It spreads through spore ingestion, causing muscle necrosis and spinal deformities, and currently has no known cure in home aquaria. Few things are as disheartening to an aquarist as watching a vibrant school of fish slowly waste away. Over my ten…
The minimum Emperor Tetra tank size (gallons) is 20 gallons for a school of six. However, a 30-gallon long aquarium is preferred to allow males to establish territories and showcase their natural swimming behavior. Few fish bring the same level of regal elegance to a freshwater setup as the Nematobrycon palmeri. Known commonly as the…
You can safely keep 6 to 8 silvertip tetras in a 10-gallon tank. This specific number balances their need for a social shoal with the biological filtration capacity of a smaller aquarium volume. Determining how many silvertip tetra in a 10 gallon tank is one of the most common questions I receive from hobbyists looking…
Black neon tetras do not get pregnant; they are egg-scatterers. A “pregnant” black neon tetra is actually “gravid,” meaning she is carrying thousands of eggs, which results in a noticeably rounded and swollen abdomen. The sight of a black neon tetra pregnant with eggs is a thrilling milestone for any aquarist. These elegant fish, scientifically…
You should stock 1 to 2 neon tetras per gallon, but only after meeting their minimum requirement of a 10-gallon tank. A group of 6 to 10 fish is essential for their social well-being. Finding the perfect balance for your aquarium is both an art and a science. When I first started keeping Paracheirodon innesi…
To distinguish Diamond Tetra male vs female, look at the fins. Males possess a significantly longer, sickle-shaped dorsal fin and more intense iridophores. Females are shorter-finned and develop a rounded, gravid morphology when ready to spawn. Few sights in the freshwater hobby compare to a well-settled school of Moenkhausia pittieri. When the light hits their…
You can safely keep 3 to 5 Blind Cave Tetras in a 10-gallon tank. Because they are active and produce moderate waste, maintaining a small group ensures better water stability and social health. Keeping fish that have evolved to live in total darkness is one of the most rewarding experiences for any hobbyist. The Blind…
Cardinal tetra schooling is a synchronized swimming behavior used for protection and social interaction. To maximize this display, keep a group of at least 10 to 15 fish in a well-planted, low-light environment. There is nothing quite as mesmerizing in the aquarium hobby as a massive group of neon-blue and deep-red fish moving as one….
