The minimum Penguin Tetra tank size (gallons) is 20 to 30 gallons for a standard school. This volume provides the necessary horizontal swimming space to accommodate their active shoaling dynamics and unique tilted swimming posture. Few fish bring as much character to a mid-sized aquarium as the Penguin Tetra, scientifically known as Thayeria boehlkei. These…
You can keep a maximum of 3 to 5 black skirt tetras in a 10-gallon tank, though this setup requires diligent maintenance. For the best health and natural behavior, a 20-gallon aquarium is highly recommended for this active, schooling species. At a glance: Black skirt tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) Temperature 70–85°F (21–29°C) Water pH 6.0–7.5 Adult…
For a healthy school of six Serpae Tetras, a 20-gallon long aquarium is the ideal minimum. This provides the necessary swimming space to support their active nature and manage their bioload capacity effectively. If you have ever been captivated by the deep, fiery red coloration of the Hyphessobrycon eques, you are certainly not alone. These…
To distinguish a Buenos Aires Tetra male vs female, look at the body shape and fin color. Males are noticeably slimmer with more intense red fins, while females are rounder, especially when carrying eggs. The Buenos Aires Tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon anisitsi, is one of the most resilient and active fish you can add…
You should keep a maximum of 5 to 6 Serpae Tetras in a 10-gallon tank. This specific number allows for a small school to minimize aggression while preventing dangerous nitrate accumulation in a limited water volume. Serpae Tetras, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon eques, are some of the most striking fish available to hobbyists. Their deep…
The ideal Cardinal Tetra tank size (gallons) is at least 20 gallons in a “long” configuration. This provides the necessary horizontal swimming space for their active shoaling behavior and ensures stable water chemistry for these sensitive fish. When you first see a massive school of Cardinal Tetras shimmering in a well-planted aquarium, it is hard…
In a 10-gallon aquarium, you can safely house a small school of 5 to 6 Penguin Tetras. This number satisfies their social needs while remaining within the biological limits of a 37.85 liter aquarium volume. When you first see the striking black stripe of a Penguin Tetra, it is hard not to fall in love…
Neon Tetra disease is a parasitic condition caused by Pleistophora hyphessobryconis, resulting in loss of color, curved spines, and death. Because no cure exists, identifying stress signs early and maintaining strict quarantine protocols are the only ways to protect your aquarium. Few sights in the aquarium hobby are as striking as a large school of…
Ideally, you should keep zero neon tetras in a 5-gallon tank. Because they are active schooling fish requiring a group of six or more, a 10-to-20-gallon aquarium is the minimum recommended size for their long-term health. One of the most common questions I receive from new hobbyists is how many neon tetras in a 5…
Identifying the sex of your Penguin Tetras is best achieved by observing body shape and fullness; females are typically rounder and more solid, especially when carrying eggs, while males remain slimmer and more streamlined. At a glance: Penguin tetra (Thayeria boehlkei) Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C) Water pH 6.0–8.0 Adult size 2.5 in (6 cm) Minimum tank…
